Tony Alexis

Chief

Chief Tony Alexis has served as the leader of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation since 2013, guiding the Nation through a period of growth, governance, and strategic development. His leadership is rooted in the protection of treaty rights, the strengthening of self-sufficiency, and the advancement of economic opportunities that ensure long-term sustainability for his people.

Working closely with his council, Chief Tony focuses on responsible governance that upholds the sovereignty of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation. A direct descendant of Chief Alexis, who signed the Adhesion to Treaty No. 6 in 1877, Chief Tony carries forward a legacy of leadership and advocacy. Elected as a councillor for Alexis, Emily brings a wealth of traditional wisdom and cultural depth to her role, having been raised in accordance with the customs of the nation.

As a committed mother and wife, Emily has seamlessly woven her familial responsibilities with her civic duties, embodying a harmonious balance between leadership and family values. Her academic pursuits led her to post-secondary education in business, providing her with a solid foundation that she has adeptly applied throughout her career.

Lonnie Letendre

Band Councillor

Lonnie Letendre is a returning Councillor for Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation. He has been married to his wife Jaqueline ‘Jackie’ Letendre since December 11, 1982. Together they have four children and a number of grandchildren.

Lonnie has a variety of work experience including heavy equipment, construction, energy, public works, education, and social work. He worked in the Alexis School teaching the first Stoney language program in kindergarten and went on to work with the Government of Alberta.

Lonnie has been a traditional dancer for a number of years and still participates as much as he can.

Lonnie has volunteered in numerous Nation projects, mainly hockey, for over thirty years. As a coach, Lonnie connected hockey players with organizations that took them around the world. His vision is to unite the community through sports and recreation.

Darwin Alexis

Councillor Darwin Alexis has been a dedicated presence in his community, committed to improving the lives of his constituents. Serving the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation since high school, he began his journey working in the Alexis Service Centre and was an integral part of the development of the Northern Isga Foundation. As the Chairman of the Education Board, he plays a crucial role in shaping the educational landscape of his community.

Moreover, Darwin is deeply connected to his cultural roots, actively practicing and promoting his heritage. This dedication enriches the community's social fabric, fostering a strong sense of identity and belonging. Tina Cardinal

Tina Cardinal is a dedicated councillor at Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, with a rich heritage and a profound commitment to her community. She is the granddaughter of John & Sophie (Potts) Cardinal and Adam & Helen (Alexis) Letendre, and the daughter of Phillip & Doris (Letendre) Cardinal.

With over 15 years of experience working in the Social Development Department, Tina has played a pivotal role in creating and implementing programs that focus on youth empowerment and community development. Her extensive experience in this field was complemented by her academic achievements, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and a Certificate in Business Management. These qualifications have equipped her with the skills to manage and develop projects effectively, including the financial expertise necessary for successful project execution.

In memory of her mother, who served as a dedicated Director for over 40 years, Tina spearheaded the creation of a memorial garden outside the Social Development Income Support Office. This project stands as a testament to her commitment to honoring her mother’s legacy and improving the community’s well-being.

Raised by parents who were passionate about bettering the lives of their people, Tina continues to follow in their footsteps, particularly those of her mother, a devoted social worker. Although she humbly acknowledges that she cannot fill her mother’s shoes, Tina strives to match her dedication and commitment to the community. Her work is driven by the same spirit of service and the desire to create a better future for the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation.

Darren Kootenay

Darren Kootenay, a steadfast advocate for cultural preservation, traces his roots to the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, where his journey began. Raised amidst the rich traditions of his community, Darren's professional path led him through the field of construction before destiny called him to public service. Earning the trust of his people, he stands as a first-time elected councillor, poised to contribute to the nation's development.

Beyond the political arena, Darren is a cultural helper, actively involved in the spiritual fabric of his community's ceremonies. His commitment to these traditions serves as a testament to his deep-rooted connection to the cultural tapestry of his people.
